Well, this was created just one week on from a really enjoyable
Swaledale Squeeze with an outdoor concert and meals al fresco.
Plus, a bumper turn out of students!
So, a couple of performances (courtesy of Pauline de Snoo’s
video camera) dated 2015 from two concertinists who both
tutored at Swalesdale Squeeze that year, and also nine years
later.
First Harry Scurfield, growling over his anglo, at Swaledale
Squeeze 2015:
Then a more sedate but nonetheless inspired performance by
Rob Harbron at Swaledale Squeeze 2015:
Special guest tutors at Swaledale Squeeze 2024 were Dappers
Delight (Susanna Borsch recorder/Adrian Brown Anglo
concertina) from Germany, here performing Oh Oh Antonio:
Next, Monti’s Czardas, Concertina and Piano by Concertube:
And now a brace of links from ‘tina enthusiast Steve Taggart:
English Concertina Fantasy, playing Carillon:
Also, Vincent Powell ‘Embraceable You’ (Gershwin), on
Wheatstone Baritone Treble English Concertina:
Excellent choices Steve. Have you done any more arrangements
of the classic concertina repertoire recently? If so please share
with us!
Kana Mimi, Brudmarsch efter Andreas Lång played on anglo
concertina. Delightfully deft playing:
Now from the unusually named Minimum Listenable
Products, Fiddle Box Carrier on Hayden Duet Concertina
(perusing the About, it seems Minimum Listenable Music is a
collaboration of remotely located musicians. Awaiting more
musicians to work together. For more details, please contact
rockisdead(at)gmail.com):
And from the rising young star of the Boer Music world, Kevin
Olckers Biltong en Braaivleis. A really professional music video:
Would be great to see that offering in the charts. Moderne
Boeremusiek wat stamp!
Wallace Calvert Cello & Concertina (Looks like this was a
Lockdown Recording. Wallace writes: Mar 9, 2021 Tune 98, and
it’s a Swedish slängpolska. The Scandinavian repertoire has been
a long time coming! I picked this up from the fabulous Fika
Scandinavian folk session in Glasgow.):
Another tasteful selection from Vincent Powell, Indifference
(Tony Murena) on Wheatstone Baritone Treble English
Concertina:
Next an absolutely classy performance. Solo English Concertina
played by Pauline de Snoo, 2005. Giulio Variations, in memory
of Giulio Regondi, composed by Annette Kruisbrink (composer
and guitarist). Premiere performance, Pauline de Snoo during
solo exam Master of Music 2005, University of Newcastle on
Tyne:
And the irrepressible Cormac Begley, described by one fan as
the Jimi Hendrix of the Anglo! Live at Other Voices Festival
(2022):
Chris Brits, a South African singer/musician, playing
Skoppelmaai. Such skill and a different way of playing the anglo:
Jody Kruskal (with Dancing Doll). He explains, “Henry is a
planchette, a marionette puppet controlled by a single string
attached to my knee. While singing and accompanying Henry on
the concertina, I bounce my leg and Henry dances to the music.
Henry always makes folks smile. Many stay to laugh at his
antics, and then to listen to the unique sound of the Anglo
concertina”:
Concertina and piano José Salas y Vito Chambi, Amargura
(vals). Bolivian art-house music tastefully arranged. A CD looks
to be available:
