Internet Video Jukebox #35

March 2023

An online concertina video jukebox curated by Paul Walker.  Please send him your favourite YouTube links of concertina players (any system or genre, including your own recordings) at vjb@concertina.org.

Springtime Greetings from jukebox curator Paul Walker – also from stalwart ‘Tina enthusiast Steve Taggart, based in UK. (Who as usual has unearthed a fascinating bundle of clips from the Internet for this issue.)

But first special correspondence from Stateside reader Greg Mirken
“Greetings, Paul. Here are a pair of links for the Jukebox. These are YouTube videos my band, Three Times Through, recently put out. We’re having sort of a competition between The Stones and The Beatles for views. When I’m 64 is medleyed with Josefin’s Waltz; Paint It Black is sandwiched between The White Petticoat and O’Connell’s Welcome to Dublin.
The video quality is very good. I am one voice in a quartet so the concertina isn’t predominant in these arrangements, but the concertina parts [especially in the pop tunes] is critical. Both of these are loads of fun to play.
I’m hoping the Concertina Org viewers will make one of these a clear favorite!
Thanks for your work on this project! Contact me if you want any more information.

“We tripped over the Rollling Stones Paint it Black riff one day at practice and realized it needed a home so we sandwiched it in between two Irish Jigs, complete with a cymbal crash! A real favorite among fans.”

“Hmmmmm”, writes Steve, “the bellows look like they’ve done some work though! And who’s that “Joseph Wheatstone” character we have to thank for all this??

He also mentions, “the late Richard Evans, who did so much for our instrument out in Australia, including as a repairer, and as the maker of the “Kookaburra” anglos.
Anyone who read the Australian “Concertina Magazine” back in the ’80s will be more than grateful for Richard’s outstanding contribution to all things “concertina”.

PW: I looked for copies of the Australian “Concertina Magazine” online –but no joy. Anybody know where they can be found?

Another selection from Steve: “Fascination” played by here Alan Day on anglo.
“l’m still trying to play the Boris M arrangement of this one for the EC.” shares Steve.

Here’s one l hadn’t heard before:-  The Last Waltz from the 2003 movie Oldboy, by Cho Yeong-Wook. Played on self made Hayden duet concertina.

“And now for …..something completely different:- Arpeggio Garden & Valse des Cerfs-Volants at The NorthEast Squeeze-In 2021 Concert (Loiselle)
Performed by Judy Minot & Mary Roth”.

“This is a non-profit laid-back weekend gathering of free-reed squeezebox players and their partners. Concertinas, accordions, melodeons, bandoneons, chemnitzers, even melodicas all get their chance. No one is paid; we’re just in it for the legendary fun: we play…and dance…and jam…and have a blowout Saturday night.”

Steve asks if I like the banjo-I certainly do! Here’s Sean Moyses (The Banjo Man) performs Emile Grimshaw’s Raggin’ the scale with his Pietsch MasterVox #7 Plectrum Banjo.

He replies, “l think the Fayre Four had this one in their repertoire!”

Read this great article at http://www.concertina.com/carlin/fayre-four-sisters/index.htm: The Fayre Four Sisters: Concertina Virtuosi by
Richard Carlin. It begins, “During the 1920s and ’30s, the concertina virtuosi known as the Fayre Four Sisters—Inga, Tina, Sylvia, and Lillian Webb1—were among the most popular performers on the British music hall and vaudeville circuits. They represented the end of the line for the “class” act that combined female good looks, fancy choreography and sets, and a repertory of light classical music (some of which had been popular since the early nineteenth century), along with more recent pop hits.”

Super selections Steve Taggart! Thanks again from Concertina World readers.

And some Boeremusiek to finish – Hottentots Holland Boereorkes – Hou My Vas (Hold Me Tight).
