Internet Video Jukebox #34

December 2022

An online concertina video jukebox curated by Paul Walker.  Please send him your favourite YouTube links of concertina players (any system or genre, including your own recordings) at vjb@concertina.org.

Greetings – from stalwart ‘Tina enthusiast Steve Taggart, Based in UK.(who as usual has unearthed a fascinating bundle of clips from the Internet)and also from my good self for this issue.

First “Planxty lrwin” on Hayden duet. Also known as Captain John Irwin. Composed by Turlough O’Carolan. “A great tune, and very nicely played, but not too sure about the video”, (reckons Steve)! You definitely need sunglasses on to view! – by Ostinati-Wony Min : Minimum Listenable Products.

A brief conversation between Paul & Steve:
“Just came across this by accident today Steve.  Cheers Paul”

Thanks for that, Paul.
Yes, l did know about the Concertina Journal but l had thought that BM’s “Fantasia” was a bit beyond me!
Mind you, “Lt. Paine”, the dedicatee being an army nurse, may have put me off a bit.
Possibly because we once had a dentist called Mrs. Payne?!
Anyway, you have inspired me to have another go at it.

lncidentally, if you like the Boris Matusewitch stuff (which l do) have you found the Classical Free Reed, online magazine  in your travels? https://www.ksanti.net/free-reed/main.html [PW: Strangely I hadn’t- but what a great resource.]

And now beautiful harmonies  on a duet…………
“Fjäriln vingad” (Swedish song by Bellman) on a duet concertina
By Holger plays the Concertina
Steve-“l really liked this:-“

Just found an interview by Dan Worrall with Gary Coover- author of several concertina tutor books in the Concertina Journal.

AhmelbSax ARTISTE: Enregistré le Vendredi 16 Avril 2021 pendant le troisième confinement au concertina Anglais
“Over the Rainbow”
just another nice little clip, on the sort of instrument that so many of us had at the commencement of our own “concertina journey” :-

He also has a crack at “Autumn Leaves” :-

My sort of stuff…………… Steve Taggart
Need I say more?
Just given away my age too!

And now -“Fascination Waltz” played by Alan Day on Anglo Concertina [This lovely waltz is played on a CG Anglo in a style not often used on this instrument]

Steve Taggart to me

“Hello Paul,
This popped up, quite unannounced, today.
Not a song with which l’m familiar, l’m sorry to say.lt really should have been.
The wonderful Michael Pierceall again:- “It’s a Most Unusual Day” on English Concertina”
Tune by Jimmy McHugh, written in 1948.  Played here on a restored 1918 Wheatstone English concertina.

Steve Taggart comments;
Memories of my youth! Listening to Dave Brubeck playing “Take Five.”
On McCann duet:-

After Steve’s varied and melodic choices, here are some performances picked by yours truly PW.
Many feature singers accompanying themselves on concertina (something I’ve been trying recently) which Rob Harbron explored recently in an excellent online workshop.

First off, following on from last edition of the Jukebox, the 2nd instalment from CW reader, based in the States- Eric Lerner. To remind you, he wrote to the editor:

“I joined ICA last winter after I discovered World Concertina Day.  Since Covid I’ve been building a YouTube channel with my own videos, which include songs accompanied by anglo concertina and anglo instrumental tunes, (as well as some acapella songs).  You might want to include some of this in Concertina Jukebox.  My YouTube channel is here –

Eric Lerner:-3 selections

“Roll to the River” -Here’s a song by Cindy Kallet, written in the 1970s in the wake of a hurricane on Cape Cod.  Accompanied on my 19th Century George Jones G/D Anglo concertina.

“These Times We’re Living In”- A song by Kate Wolf.  Accompanied on my 19th Century George Jones G/D Anglo concertina.  “There are no roads that do not bend.”

PW-I first heard David Bowie singing this song- originally written by Jacques Brel translated into English by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman : “Port of Amsterdam”

Dick Miles, based in Ireland– with a self composed, contemporary fishing song. Not sure if this would be classed as a shanty? : “Home to the Haven”

And now for some Boeremusiek:
Suikerbossie, perdeby, Hou jou roksak toe. Keurspel- Dagbreek boereorkes

Die twaalfde #plaaskonsertjie deur Louis en Pellie Brink vanaf Rietputs.

Helpmekaar Vastrap · Kevin Olckers

Biltong en Braaivleis
This latter is being launched with a professional video,
using Apple music & Spotify .
Good luck Kevin.

Damien Barber is the last track on this Jukebox. A proud Norfolk man and heavily influenced by such earlier Norfolk singers as Walter Pardon and Peter Bellamy, Damien is a stylish and distinctive singer, be it unaccompanied or alongside his guitar or concertina. Though he has now resided for some time in West Yorkshire, his roots remain firmly planted in his beloved East Anglia.

Super to collaborate with you Steve Taggart. Thanks again from C.W. readers.
