Michel Van der Meiren

We greatly regret having to announce the death of Michel Van Der Meiren, the ICA webmaster.

Michel died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack on March 24th 2020.

It was not coronavirus related.

Many ICA members will remember Michel from the Swaledale Squeeze where he was an enthusiastic participant.

A full obituary will appear in the next Concertina World.

No funeral arrangements are known at present. There is a website for condolences:

Cancellations due to the Corona virus

The following events are cancelled or postponed due to the Corona virus situation:

This year’s Swaledale Squeeze cancelled

We’re sorry, but you probably won’t be surprised …

We have decided that given the current situation with covid-19, it would be very unwise to run the Swaledale Squeeze this year. The potential risks to participants and people that we know seem to be too great.

We have held back from opening bookings for the last couple of weeks to see how the situation develops, and we have now decided not to open them. Obviously people might have booked accommodation etc, and we’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused. Perhaps you would like to visit Swaledale anyway to support the community in the beautiful location that we make our home for a weekend every year. We will be using some of our reserves to pay the guest tutors in part, to try to help with their loss of earnings.

We’ll send the dates of next year’s squeeze and keep you posted with that.

Until then, I hope you stay safe and well.

ICA 2020 Annual Gathering and AGM is postponed

Due to the global virus outbreak and the temporary closure of the event venue, The National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) in Hartlepool, our AGM event is postponed until a date in the future yet to be decided.  We apologise for this, and for any inconvenience to members.  The safety of our members, suppliers and the wider community has to be our first priority at this time.  We will keep members informed of any update by messages on the website, and by email.
Meanwhile, keep yourselves safe and enjoy your music!
With best wishes from your Committee,
Martin Henshaw (ICA MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY)

This year’s Scandinavian Squeeze-in is canceled

Hello everyone,

It is with great regret that I have to announce the cancellation of
SSI 2020, the Scandinavian Squeeze-In which would have been our 21st
annual gathering.

The reason should surprise no one; it’s the fallout from the
coronavirus pandemic.

Borders are closed.  Transportation is disrupted.  Gatherings of more
than 10 people — and that would include us — are forbidden.  That
situation is unlikely to change before the scheduled dates of our
Squeeze-In.  And even if it did, the way the virus spreads would leave
me fearful that our gathering could contribute to the spread.

There’s no point in simply postponing the SSI.  Once the various
restrictions are lifted, all sorts of other events that had to close
will be returning to compete for participants’ schedules.

Instead, I will now begin planning for SSI 2021, which will be held —
“as always” — on the last full weekend of April, i.e., April 23-25, 2021.

I hope that I will see many of you there… and maybe even before then.

In the meantime, I hope you will all remain healthy.

Sincerely,      /Jim Lucas

INTERNET VIDEO JUKEBOX 22 Nov-19

Steve Taggart (concertina enthusiast extraordinaire) has unearthed lots of musical  goodies for us this month (enabling me to put my feet up!).

He writes:
“Paul, here’s a beautiful little waltz by Frederic Paris who, l believe, composed that other great tune “Le Canal en Octobre”: (Webmaster: Yes, indeed he did)
